Learning the times tables is a vital part of primary schooling. Mastery of times tables from 1x to 12x gives students the confidence to solve arithmetic problems quickly and efficiently. Students generally have a sound understanding of multiplication facts for 0x, 1x, 2x, 5x and 10x by the end of Year 2. Year 3 students can start learning times tables up to 12 x 12, so that they would know and could recall all the facts to 12 times table when they complete Year 4. However, some students find it difficult to recall multiplication facts in Year 5 and 6, and in secondary school. Therefore, students should be provided with plenty of opportunities to practise multiplication and division skills in various learning environments.
Teach simple multiplication and division skills to students in early years of primary school using concrete materials like Unifix Cubes, counters, number lines with pegs and number charts (skip counting, doubling, halving and equal grouping). Play Buzz Off and hopscotch games with children to practise skip counting. From Year 3, Circle Champion using two large dice can be played for recalling multiplication facts, multiplication and division bingo games are also great. Online multiplication and division games can be incorporated as well. The games together with daily times tables practice (rote learning) will equip students with the necessary mental computation skills to solve mathematical problems as they progress through their schooling and beyond.
The Katherina Giselle times tables worksheet can be downloaded and printed for daily practice. A Katherina Giselle times table chart is also provided.
